There are many sources for mineral oil in the marine environment, but the biggest source is accidential oil spills.
There are many sources for oil pollution in the oceans. In terms of shipping, these are accidential oil spills, ship accidents, bilge water, but also exhaust gas cleaning. The problem with mineral oil is that it consists of thousands of chemical compounds and that some are very persistent in the environment, where they can accumulate. Some compounds are very toxic like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which can accumulate in marine organisms.
It is a challenge to measure mineral oil concentrations in water. Marena analysed oil spills, oil in ballast water of oil tankers and in effluents of exhaust gas cleaning systems.
New results of a Black Carbon measurement campaign submitted by Germany. The results show that the new marine 2020 0.50% sulfur fuels may contain a large fraction of aromatic compounds, which have a direct impact on Black Carbon emissions. Download the PDF here:
